What is a Public Charter School?
Public charter schools are tuition-free public schools that are open to all students. They operate with more independence than traditional public schools, but in exchange, they must meet higher standards of accountability.
Every charter school is guided by a “charter” — a contract that outlines the school’s mission, educational program, performance goals, and how success will be measured. Each school is overseen by an authorizer (like a district school board, university, mayor’s office, or nonprofit). Authorizers make sure charter schools are meeting their promises and following the law.
